Andrews Kurth’s Jonathan Day to Receive Lifetime Achievement Award

HOUSTON – Andrews Kurth Partner Jonathan Day received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Texas Law School Alumni Association during an annual dinner held Friday, February 29, 2008 at The Four Seasons Hotel in Austin.

This award honors an alumnus who has had a distinguished legal career and who has brought honor to the University of Texas School of Law through his or her service to the legal profession and to society. “With this award, the Association recognizes that alumnus who epitomizes the highest goals and traditions of the profession: diligence, discernment, integrity, and a commitment to the betterment of our civic life.” Previous recipients include E. William Barnett, The Honorable Lloyd M. Bentsen, Jr., Charles Alan Wright and The Honorable John L. Hill, Jr.

“What an honor to be recognized by the Alumni Association in this way,” Day said. “This recognition is a part of a great tradition, and I feel very  privileged to join the ranks of the previous honorees.”

Day has worked diligently to improve public education in Houston. He led Citizens for Good Schools, which reformed governance of the Houston Independent School District. He co-chaired two successful HISD bond elections, chaired the Board of Houston A+ Challenge, led the Greater Houston Partnership’s Education Committee, and served as a trustee of the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation.

“We’re proud to see Jonathan recognized for this professional and community leadership and service,” said Andrews Kurth Managing Partner Bob Jewell. “He provides a tremendous example for all of us to follow.”

Day has been instrumental in building Andrews Kurth’s Public Law practice during his almost four decades with the firm. His primary professional focus is in litigation involving governmental entities and administrative practices before state and local agencies. His clients include cities, counties, and special-purpose governmental entities such as river authorities and transit authorities.

Day is currently Chairman of the Board of Houston Zoo, Inc.  He is also a member and past chair of Neighborhood Centers, Inc., a United Way agency that each year serves more than 180,000 individuals and families. He is also committed to Houston arts institutions, having served as a board member of the Alley Theatre, the Contemporary Arts Museum, The Wortham Theater Foundation, DiverseWorks and Lawndale Art Center.

Day received his J.D. in 1965 from the University of Texas School of Law and his A.B. in 1962 from Princeton University.
