WASHINGTON, D.C. –  The Monuments Men Foundation for the Preservation of Art received a National Humanities Medal from President George W. Bush recently in a East Room ceremony at the White House.

Robert M. Edsel founded the organization for the purpose of honoring the soldiers of World War II who took on responsibility for tracking down hundreds of thousands of looted and missing pieces of art and other cultural artifacts. Mr. Edsel is the co-producer of the documentary The Rape of Europa and wrote a book on the same subject, “Rescuing Da Vinci.”

According to the website of the National Endowment for the Humanities, “The medal honors individuals or groups whose work has deepened the nation’s understanding of the humanities, broadened our citizens’ engagement with the humanities, or helped preserve and expand Americans’ access to important resources in the humanities.”

Tom Kline is a Partner in Andrews Kurth’s Washington D.C. office, who, along with Kathryn Garner, a Partner in the firm’s Austin office, assisted in the formation of the group.

“We are very proud of our association with the Monuments Men Foundation,” said Kline. “We especially congratulate the group’s founder, Robert Edsel. Without his energy and dynamism, none of this would have been possible.”
