NEW YORK – The Brooklyn Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) has recognized Andrews Kurth Litigation Partner Lynn Judell with the prestigious Terri and Nick Letica Award for her support of pro bono work. Judell will receive her award during the group’s 2007 Volunteer Recognition Night set for December 6. Since 1991, the VLP has worked to address the unmet legal needs of the residents of Brooklyn who cannot afford legal services. It is the only free legal services program that operates borough-wide, offering pro bono representation to all Brooklyn residents, including those who are not eligible for or who cannot be served by Legal Aid or Legal Services. The VLP lawyers, recruited from the private bar and trained and supported by VLP volunteer mentors, address problems such as elder fraud and abuse, family disputes, and consumer debt. In addition to offering direct representation for those in need, the VLP works in partnership with educational institutions, social service agencies and legal services throughout Brooklyn. “I'm deeply honored to receive this award from the VLP, an incredibly effective organization that day in day out provides assistance to the most indigent residents of Brooklyn with critical legal problems,” Judell said. “I’m grateful not only to Terri and Nick Lettica and VLP Executive Director Jeannie Costello but also to my colleagues at Andrews Kurth who are committed to serving the public interest.” The organization runs critical programs such as the Home and Hospital Visiting Lawyer Service for the elderly and people with HIV/AIDS; the Senior Outreach Program to teach seniors about consumer fraud and advance planning; the Battered Women's Legal Helpline; and The Civil Legal Advice and Resource Office, among others. Judell has been with Andrews Kurth since 2003. Prior to this, she was a founding member of the firm Rosenthal, Judell & Uchima. She concentrates her practice in representing clients in securities, employment and contract disputes. She received her B.A. from Pomona College in 1980 and her J.D. from the University of San Francisco in 1984. After practicing in San Francisco from 1984 through 1987, Judell joined the litigation department of Schulte Roth & Zabel, where she practiced until 1994. In 1994 and 1995, Ms. Judell practiced with the antitrust bureau of the New York state Attorney General's office, where she investigated several high-profile corporate transactions for compliance with state and federal antitrust laws. In addition to the New York bar, Judell is admitted to practice in the state and federal courts in California.
